Matinee Interview
[Interview by Jamie Cockburn]
Matinee are an Italian four piece that screams out sounds of UK indie, Brit-pop rock ‘n’ roll. Plus Special Guests recently caught up with vocals and base player Alf Ioannone for a chat.
What made you take your name from the Franz Ferdinand song?
Many years ago we were a Franz Ferdinand tribute band and we chose that name for the band after their big hit Matinee in 2004. Our lead singer Luigi wrote to lead singer of Franz Ferdinand Kapranos and to our surprise he invited us backstage to a big Italian festival called “traffic festival” Kapranos  said “why don’t you keep this name for the band even if you start your own music” and so Matinee was born.
Many people would be surprised from your music that you are actually Italian, how would you categorise your music?
We’re an indie rock band and we come from a country that has a totally different music market to the UK but we have always listened to Brit pop band like Blur or Shed7  and so much so that we have now moved to London.
Who would you say are your main influences?
We have different influences, for example Luigi loves Shed7,  Josh loves Pink Floyd, Alex is really multifaceted from rock to disco and I  listen bands like the The Smiths, The Police or more recently The Cinematics & Bombay Bicycle Club.
You seem to have a lot of Scottish connections, how did that all come about?
Through some Scottish friends of ours we started to play in some venues around Scotland. We then met producer Tony Doogan (Carl Barat, Teenage Fanclub, Belle & Sebastian)  where we recorded our debut single “City Lifestyle” and debut album to be released in 2012 in his Castle Of Doom Studios in Galsgow. Legendary Scottish DJ Jim Gellatly has championed our music on his radio shows from the start and now we are friends with Scottish bands like The 10:40’s, Miniature Dinosaurs and Pose Victorius it is always a pleasure share the stages with them they are really super cool bands!
What you say your highlights were since becoming Matinee?
Supportings UK bands like Mystery Jets, Carl Barat, The Futureheads, The Paddingtons, touring the U.S.A (NYC is a really great experience) and  playing at the Haddow Fest in Edinburgh.
What does the future hold for Matinee?
We have a single out now with a follow up single and debut album planned for 2012 and lots of gigs.
